There is a particular address in central Hanoi that matters to anyone seriously interested in Vietnamese fine art: 36-38 Trang Tien Street. Located a short walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, in the historic cultural corridor that connects the Old Quarter to the French Quarter, Hanoi Art Gallery has been introducing collectors, travellers and art lovers to the finest Vietnamese paintings for years.
Who We Are
Hanoi Art Gallery is a specialist gallery dedicated to original Vietnamese fine art – primarily lacquer paintings (son mai) and oil on canvas works by established contemporary Vietnamese artists. We are not a souvenir shop, and we do not sell prints or reproductions. Every work in our collection is an original, signed by the artist and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
What Makes Trang Tien Street Special
Trang Tien Street has been the cultural heart of Hanoi for over a century. In the French colonial period, it was home to bookshops, theatres and the Hanoi Opera House – which still stands at its eastern end. Today it remains one of the most architecturally significant streets in the city, lined with European-style buildings from the early 20th century.
Number 36 sits in this tradition. Our gallery occupies a space that feels right for fine art – calm, well-lit, and serious. It is the kind of place where you can look at a painting for as long as you need to, without pressure.
Our Collection
Lacquer paintings (son mai): Son mai is the jewel of the collection. Built up in 15 to 25 layers of natural lacquer resin, with embedded eggshell, gold and silver leaf, and mother-of-pearl inlay, then hand-polished to reveal extraordinary depth and luminosity. Our lacquer collection includes major works by Thanh Chuong, Dinh Viet, Pham Thang Long and Dinh Quan.
Oil on canvas: Our oil painting collection reflects the strong tradition of oil painting in Vietnam, which arrived through the French colonial art schools in the 1920s and 30s. Works by Nguyen Van Bang and others represent this tradition at its finest.
Our Artists
- Thanh Chuong: Vietnam's most internationally recognised lacquer painter; bold compositions fusing Vietnamese folk iconography with contemporary abstraction
- Dinh Viet: master of lacquer landscape painting; his works capture the poetic quietness of Vietnamese rural life
- Pham Thang Long: luminous lacquer works exploring light, lotus and Vietnamese cultural symbolism
- Dinh Quan: specialist in figurative lacquer painting featuring Vietnamese women in traditional ao dai
- Nguyen Van Bang: leading oil painter with an impressionist sensibility and strong following among international collectors
